Benefit 2009 Artists     (Musicians) 

Flo Gross-Applefield donated "Encroachment," a painting of New York's East River Area, "In the Springtime," and "At Memorial Park, Athens, Georgia." Flo studied art in both Austria and the US. She has exhibited locally as well as judged shows in both Tennessee and Texas.  She has lived and studied art for over 40 years in the Athens area and is well known here for her artistry.

Ilona Bostian donated hand-painted glassware and ornaments. She is a local Athens artist, who works full-time as an interpreter for the Deaf.  She fills the interim hours with creative efforts in a myriad of mediums, and is currently infatuated with the shine and sparkle of paint on glass. You can see her work in shops around town or online at ilona.

Clair Clements donated "Five Anoles with Hostas." Claire and her husband, Bob (next artist), have also been long-time supporters of the Mental Health Benefit & Art Auction.

Bob Clements donated "City Hall with Scaffolding" and "Faerie Light." Bob taught art at The University of Georgia for 25 years, and now does public art projects in Atlanta.

Luke Durkish donated "Conversation."  He is a schoolteach and his father, James Durkish, hand-made the wooden frame on the piece. 

Tom Hancock donated "Green with a Heart" and "My My MOAI," both are 3-Dimensional mixed media pieces.

Melody Croft donated "Bluebells." Melody and her husband, Bob (next artist), have also been long-time supporters of the Mental Health Benefit.

Bob Croft donated multiple pieces, which demonstrates his wide range of styles, "Flagstone Follies," "Lamplit Life," "Mountains of the Moon," "Sunrise in Jupiter," "Talking but not Listening," "27th Anniversary," "Harlem Night Club," "Labor of Light," and "Wheat Field." Unframed and unmatted, but can be displayed as they are. 

Russell's painting "Heidelberg Castle" was donated by Bob Clements, and comes with a interesting history.  The painting is painted on glass, and is estimated to have been painted in the early 1900's.  It hung over the mantle in the home The Hodges' of Noble County, near Cromwell, IN.  It was then passed on to an adopted grandson of Skidaway, SC.  It was given to UGA Art Professor Bob Clements in October 2007.  More detailed information is available to the lucky new owner of this piece. 

M. Scott donated "The Devil and the Wheel He Turns," an acrylic on canvas. The piece is framed in a beautiful, custom-made wooden frame.  The frame was crafted by David Stroud. M. Scott is a self-taught expressionist and his paintings display pin-pointed emotions.

Bobbi Keeler donated "Explosion of Feathers," an acrylic abstract on canvas, done entirely with feathers, and features silver framing in acrylics.

Linda Henneman donated "Impaled Rowboat," an oil stick and graphite on paper, and "Wood Pile," an oil on wood.

Patrick Mizelle donated "North Campus," an acrylic on canvas.  Patrick is a UGA grad and recently retired to Athens after an art career in Atlanta.

Janis Dalton donated two 5 x 7 photographic prints "Irises" and "White Flower." Both are framed and matted.

Stacy Alexander donated "Leave It," a mixed media bee's wax collage. Stacy is a California artist whose work encompasses the use of many different types of media and addresses frinedships among women, current events and emerging society aided by the fields of politics, psychology, religion, music, sexual politics, myth, emotion, compassion, humor and how these things enable art to weave meaningful images out of the individual strands of knowledge from other, more restrictively focused disciplines.  She was trained in art at the Alfred C. Glassell, Jr. School of Art in Houston TX, The University of Houston, Houston TX , Institute of Mosaic Art, Oakland CA and through various lessons and workshops.  She owns and operates Stacy Alexander Studios in Oakland CA.    Stacy Alexander Studios

John Odom donated an abstract painting, unnamed.  John was a long-time supporter of Mental Health America of Northeast Georgia.  He donated this original acrylic on canvas for the Art Auction.  John passed away in 2008.  He painted for 35 years and specialized in abstract expressionism.

Bradley Tolbert donated three untitled pieces, each is a mixed media, featuring glass, oil, paper, twine, and currency.  Bradley is another artist who has donated for the Mental Health Benefit & Art Auction.

Sophie Howell donated "Foot Loose," "Strained," "Sunday Morning," "Noise on Break," and "This is not my House." Sophie is a UGA student double majoring in Painting and Psychology.  She looks forward to becoming an art therapist after graduate school.

Patrick Dean donated three untitled cartoon in blue, red and yellow.

Stefan Eberhard donated "Psychedelic Dream," a color photomicrograph, which is a photograph taken with a microscope, of Vitamin C crystals with polarized light.  Eberhard Photography

Cheri Wranosky donated "Why is my head blue?" a clay sculpture. Cheri's work reflects the human condition and our reactions as we interact with our surrounding. She often combines found and recycled objects with her hand-built pieces. See but Creations

Laurel Hill donated "Silver Heart Necklace," and "Silver Toujours Banner Necklace," both are hand-made sterling silver.  Both hang on an adjustable 18" sterling silver chain.  The Silver heart is an anotomical heart depiction, while the Toujours Banner is stamped with the French word for "always."  Laurel Hill 

Jasmine Rizer donated "Crying Girl," "Fancy Cat," and an edition of "Short Girl" cartoon strip, "Short Girl Fights Depression."  All are pen and ink cartoons, and the cartoon strip was featured in the online publication Moonshine in 2008.

Peter Loose donated "Half Blue Crow" birdhouse. Peter lives and works in Hull, just north of Athens.  His quilt and antique collection is featured in the movie "Nights in Rodanthe."  Peter Loose

Kate Laboon donated multiple hand-block printed fabrics, which are printed on cotton and stretched.  Stella James Design

Fred Dolezal donated a Porcelain Vase and a Casserole, both are wood-fired pieces.  He also donated a Jar with Lid, a jar with Handles, and a Ceremonial Cauldron, which are salt-glazed pieces.

Robin Fay donated "Féir," green palm leaves against a backdrop of deep blue night sky and "Bejewled," swirling ribbons against a sea of deep green.  Both are mixed media on canvas, incorporating glass beads, silver flake, oil stick, and handmade paper, to name a few.  Robin is an artist, web designer, and librarian.  She is also the editor of Moonshine Arts MagazineRobinArt

Marshall L. Reddoch donated "Yellow Bloom with Apple," an acrylic and pen piece depicting the bloom and apple at night on a table, and "Flower of the Sun," an acrylic and pen work.

Donald Harris donated "Red Admirals with Cone Flowers," "The Butterfly That You Were Chasing," and "Yellow Swallowtail on Purple Thistle."  The butterflys and flowers are photographed locally at Sandy Creek Nature Center and the State Botanical Gardens, and from as far away as Bird-in-Hand, PA.  "The Butterfly That You Were Chasing," features a nude Modigliani who has been taken from a regular bed to a bed of flowers, with a Monarch butterfly just behind her head.

Sally E. Walker donated three photographs, "Black Sheep," Breaking up is hard to do," and "I just want a nap."  These are photographs taken during her many travels, most recently to Antarctica and New Zealand.  Both are matted and framed.

Jimmy 'Cap Man' Straehla donated "Towny Peace," a mixed media piece involving 5v tin, spray paint, and 38 bottlecaps.  For more than ten years, Cap Man has been making art and keeping the bottlecap truck on the road!  His materials are found objects, or purchased from Athens Habitat.  Bottle Cap Man    Bottle Cap Man

Sue Goldstein donated "Somewhere," a color photograph, which is digitally printed using archival materials.  The image of this rainbow was shot in December 2008, over Klein Bonaine in Netherlands Antilles.

Crisha Yantis donated two small dishes depicting flowers, a porcelain necklace, porcelain earrings, a set of 3 porcelain buttons, and a cup with face drawings.  Crisha Yantis

Kate Clarke donated a square jar with carvings, with a fitted, removable lid.

Mark S. Johnson donated a set of 3 ceramic objects, including a tiny cup and saucer, a tiny bottle, and a small flower pot.

Thom Wittenberg donated three photographs. Each photograph is titled after the place depicted.  "Santa Clara, Cuba," "Bukhara, Uzbekistan," and "Panama City, Panama."  Thom finds something fascinating, even compelling, about doors and windows, and photographs them throughout his journeys as 'The Accidental Photographer.'

Ernest J. Majersky (1925-2005) painted "S.S.Picuda, Pacific Theatre, WWII" in 1946 and gave it to his brother Joe, who served on this submarine.  The Sub sank twelve enemy vessels during the war, and Joe came back from the war a confirmed pacifist.  Thus, he did not want the painting.  It stayed in our family home until now. Donated by Lisa Majersky.

Jim Parker donated two photographs, "Union Church in Ila,GA" and "Angel in Taliaferro County."

Mark D. Keever donated two pieces, "Sushi" and "Heffalump."  Both are oil on transparency including spray paint.  He started with the closest colors and worked backwards.
